John 1:29 “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!..”
Devotional:
John the Baptist’s words are brief, but they echo through all of eternity. “Look! The Lamb of God…” not just a lamb, not just a teacher, not just a prophet. God’s Lamb, His provision, chosen and sent from heaven, pure and perfect, offered for us.
In calling Jesus “the Lamb of God,” John draws our attention back to generations of sacrifices, especially the Passover lamb. At Passover, the Israelites were protected from death by the blood of a lamb painted on their doorposts. (Exodus 12) That lamb didn’t remove sin; it simply delayed judgment. But now, Jesus comes as the Lamb, not to delay judgment, but to remove it entirely. That includes every failure, every wound, every dark place in every life. Jesus carried it all, yours and mine, on His shoulders to the cross.
You don’t have to earn your way to God. You don’t have to be defined by your past. You don’t have to carry what He already took to the cross. Jesus, the Lamb of God, came for you. Behold Him. Trust Him. Follow Him.
Personal Reflection:
- What does it mean to you that Jesus is called “the Lamb of God”?
-
What areas in your life where you need to experience the cleansing power of His sacrifice?
- Are you still trying to “earn” forgiveness, or have you received the Lamb’s full sacrifice?
- How can you point others to Jesus as John the Baptist did?
Prayer:
Father God,
Thank You for Your perfect plan of salvation. Long before I ever knew I needed a Savior, You had already prepared a Lamb. When judgment was coming, You provided a way, not through my efforts or my righteousness, but through the blood of Your Son.
I confess that sometimes I forget the weight of what You’ve done. I try to carry what You’ve already carried. I strive to earn what You’ve already given. But today, I pause to behold You. I remember the cost. And I receive Your grace again with open hands and a grateful heart.
Holy Spirit, help me to live in light of this sacrifice, not in fear or shame, but in freedom and joy. May I never stop beholding the Lamb. May I point others to You like John did, boldly, humbly, and with deep awe.
In Jesus name,
Amen
